WHAT IF STAIRCASE is a mobile fantasy staircase that is installed in multiple sites based on a simple question: “what if there was a staircase here?”

“What if…” is exercise to question and challenge conventional notions of private and public spaces. The staircase was a metaphor for in-between spaces that are often overlooked even though they are where we can begin to analyze and reinvent the relationship between people, space, and surrounding context.

“What if there was a staircase on a street that allowed someone to peek into someone else’s garden?”

“What if there was a staircase here? How differently can we see the familiar things around us?”

“ What if there was a staircase here that connects someone’s room in an apartment building? Would this change in circulation create a meeting opportunity for people who would not otherwise meet and interact?”
